Day 6 - Oceano → Buellton

A deliciously scenic transition into wine country! Roll out from Oceano through classic Central Coast farmland—wide-open fields, orchards, and rural charm—then climb into more rolling golden hills that showcase California's sun-drenched landscapes.

The route gradually shifts into vineyard country, with rows of grapevines stretching across gentle hillsides under big blue skies. A standout tour favorite: the rest stop at Zaca Mesa Vineyards, where riders are treated to an incredible charcuterie spread—think artisan cheeses, cured meats, fresh fruit, and local crackers, all set against vineyard views. (When have you ever had a charcuterie spread at a rest area on a bike event? This one’s legendary!)

Day 7 - Buellton → Ventura

Another long day, but much flatter than Day 1—ideal for racking up smooth, enjoyable miles after the hillier stretches! Roll out from Buellton through rolling wine country and open valleys, gradually descending toward the coast with gentle terrain that lets you settle into a steady group pace and enjoy the flow.

The route brings you into the upscale, sun-soaked vibes of Santa Barbara—think palm-lined streets, Spanish architecture, yacht-filled harbor views, and that classic California coastal elegance. A tour favorite rest stop awaits with a frozen bananas (and more) to fuel the final push—simple, perfect, and always appreciated!

Finish along one of the highlights: the iconic bicycle path hugging the Ventura coastline—wide, scenic, oceanfront riding with crashing waves for miles.

Day 8 - Ventura → Los Angeles

The triumphant final day—capping an epic 525-mile journey along California's legendary coast! We roll out from Ventura and head south through stunning coastal stretches: first hugging the rugged beauty of Point Mugu with its dramatic sea cliffs and rocky shores then gliding into the glamorous stretch of Malibu with celebrity homes perched on hillsides, and endless ocean vistas.

Then comes the payoff: an awesome finish line celebration in Los Angeles, where everyone gathers to cheer each rider across the line. It’s not just about completing the ride—it’s a heartfelt celebration of the entire journey and the powerful mission of the Arthritis Foundation: raising funds, building awareness, and fighting for a world where people with arthritis live without limits.

Arrive triumphant, emotional, and connected—surrounded by fellow riders, staff, and supporters. You've turned passion into progress, and the finish line party seals it with joy, pride, and lasting memories. What a way to end one of the world's greatest charity rides!

Day 0 – San Francisco

60 miles | 2,000+' elevation gain
  • Carolina Multisports on BART in San Francisco
  • San Francisco, California, USA
  • Golden Gate Bridge, California, USA
  • Carolina Multisports at Golden Gate Bridge

Arrive in vibrant downtown San Francisco for registration and a relaxed welcome reception. Check in, settle into your hotel, and connect with fellow riders and event staff over good food and conversation.

There are a few easy ways to get from SFO or OAK to the host hotel. Some riders take BART into the city and then grab a quick, inexpensive Uber for the last mile. You can also meet up with friends at the airport and share an Uber. Expect to pay around $80 for a direct Uber or about $10 if you take BART.

Although there is no official ride scheduled on Day 0, I recommend pedaling out over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge (the official route skips it on Day 1) or tackle the locals’ favorite “Paradise Loop”—a stunning circuit around the northern bay with sweeping views and classic San Francisco scenery. It’s an incredible warm-up ride I highly recommend!

Pacific Coast Hwy 1

California's Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1, often called the PCH) is one of the world's most iconic scenic roads, hugging the rugged coastline for hundreds of miles with breathtaking ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and winding roads that feel carved into the edge of the continent. From the misty northern shores near San Francisco to the sunnier southern beaches, it delivers endless panoramas of turquoise water, wildlife sightings, and that classic sense of adventure—best savored slowly, with frequent pullouts to soak in the raw beauty.

Day 1 – San Francisco → Santa Cruz

46 miles | 5,000+' elevation gain
  • Joel Young at the California Coast Classic
  • San Francisco
  • Joel Young with Shannon Marang Cox & Erin Starck
  • Joel Young and Regina Luppi at the California Coast Classic

The longest day, but you’ll be fresh! Starting at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, the Bay’s sea salt gives way to eucalyptus as you climb into the hills toward the ocean. Reaching Land's End in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area brings stunning coastal views and a quick leg wake-up—those early miles pack in over half the day’s elevation, with punchy climbs continuing through Pacifica.

Then the route follows Highway 1 along the coast for long, scenic stretches: rolling terrain, endless ocean vistas, dramatic cliffs, and wide shoulders perfect for settling into a group pace and racking up miles.

A personal favorite: Devil’s Slide, a paved cliffside bike trail on the old Highway 1 (rerouted via Tom Lantos Tunnels in 2014). It hugs towering bluffs with jaw-dropping ocean views straight down to crashing waves, wide lanes for safe riding, overlooks with benches, and signs explaining the area’s dramatic geology. A cinematic, bucket-list moment right on the edge of the Pacific.

Yellow Arrows

Chase these bright yellow arrows across the California Coast Classic—they’re your constant, upbeat companions, attached to posts, peeking from fences, and marking turns through artichoke fields and strawberry patches. Every bold black arrow feels like a quick fist-bump: “Right here, keep rolling!” Uncomplicated, impossible to miss, and surprisingly addictive, the arrows quietly become your favorite route cheerleaders, guiding you straight to every golden moment along the coast.

Day 2 – Santa Cruz → Monterrey

51 miles | 2,000+' elevation gain
  • Carolina Multisports at Norma Jeans Coffee
  • Carolina Multisports in Monterey
  • Carolina Multisports in Monterey
  • Joel Young in Monterey

A shorter, gentler recovery day after the long opener—and a tour favorite for good reason. Roll south from Santa Cruz through rolling farmland, open fields, and teasing Pacific glimpses on mostly gentle, rolling terrain—ideal for settling into a group pace, chatting with fellow riders, and soaking in the relaxed coastal scenery. Make sure to hit the beloved stop at Norma Jean’s Coffee in Aptos for a perfect mid-ride boost of strong coffee, fresh pastries, and that classic local vibe that keeps everyone energized.

As you near Monterey State Beach, keep an eye skyward for paragliders gracefully soaring above the sandy dunes, adding a touch of aerial magic to the ride. Then, just when you’re cruising easy… a sneaky mile-long climb into camp keeps things honest and wakes the legs one last time before settling in for the night.

Bixby Bridge

The iconic Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur is one of the world's most photographed landmarks on the Pacific Coast Highway. Built in 1932, this elegant concrete arch bridge spans 714 feet and towers 280 feet above a dramatic canyon and crashing Pacific waves. Its graceful design frames stunning ocean and cliff views, marking the dramatic gateway to Big Sur's wild coastal beauty.

Day 3 – Monterrey → Big Sur

47 miles | 2,800+' elevation gain
  • Joel Young and Stew Herrera at the California Coast Classic
  • Big Sur at the California Coast Classic
  • Big Sur, CA, USA
  • Dinner in Big Sur River

Iconic and unforgettable—this day dives into the legendary beauty of the California coast! Roll out from Monterey and head south along the famous 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, winding past luxurious estates, pristine golf courses, and serene cedar groves that feel worlds away from the everyday. Keep an eye out for the storybook-style house with its fairytale, curving roofline.

The route turns more remote as you rejoin Highway 1, hugging dramatic cliffs with jaw-dropping Pacific vistas. Highlights include the majestic Bixby Bridge (one of the most photographed spots on the entire tour) and the transition into Big Sur—rugged, wild, and breathtaking—with ancient redwoods towering overhead in shaded groves.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The California Coast Classic bike tour includes camping at no extra cost each night, and that's the option most participants—including myself—choose to fully immerse in the coastal experience. Hotels are available for an additional fee (with shuttle service provided), or you can mix both for the best of both worlds! My favorite stop is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Day 4 – Big Sur → Cambria

68 miles | 6,100+' elevation gain
  • Carolina Multisports on the Pacific Coast Highway
  • Joel Young at the California Coast Classic
  • Joel Young at Nepenthe, Big Sur, CA, USA
  • Carolina Multisports at Napenthe, Big Sur, CA, USA
The most picturesque and magical part of the entire route—pure Big Sur enchantment! For the first time in four years, the classic Day 4 returns exclusively along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway 1, thanks to the completed repair of the major slide that had forced inland detours.

Start with a steep climb straight out of camp to wake the legs, then dive into the legendary scenery: winding through scented redwood groves, dramatic coastal cliffs, and endless ocean vistas. A tour favorite stop awaits at Nepenthe in Big Sur—perched high above the Pacific for stunning views and a perfect mid-ride break.

The highlight climb? The famous Twin Sisters—a challenging, rewarding pair of ascents that deliver breathtaking panoramas and a huge sense of accomplishment.

Cambria Pines Lodge

One hotel stay I highly recommend is the Cambria Pines Lodge, a great midway recharge spot after 4 days on your bike, not to mention the challenging leg through Big Sur. It's serene setting with cozy rooms, fireplaces, and gardens offers the perfect way to rest and refuel for the remainder of the trip. Better yet, split the cost with a roommate!

Day 5 – Cambria → Oceano

58 miles | 1,700+' elevation gain
  • Carolina Multisports at Brown Butter Cookie Company
  • Pacific Coast Highway
  • Carolina Multisports at Morro Bay
  • Carolina Multisports at California Coast Classic

A scenic transition day blending coastal charm with classic California inland vibes! Roll out from charming Cambria and head south, first hugging the Pacific through picturesque Morro Bay—keep an eye out for the iconic Morro Rock rising dramatically from the water.

A tour favorite stop awaits at Brown Butter Cookie Co. in Morro Bay—grab a warm, irresistible cookie (or two) for the perfect mid-ride treat and energy boost.

The route then turns warmer and more inland, climbing gently into rolling golden hills that perfectly capture California’s “Golden State” nickname—wide-open vistas of sun-drenched grasslands, oak-studded ridges, and peaceful rural roads. It’s a beautiful, open contrast to the dramatic cliffs of Big Sur.

Massage Services

Daily massage services are also offered for an additional fee, with a dedicated team of massage therapists and a Recovery Lounge set up at base camp each evening—this is one service I take full advantage of to keep my legs fresh and ready for each new daily adventure on the road.
